Tulsa Public Schools is encouraging multilingual seniors to apply for recognition of their proficiency in multiple languages by graduating with the district’s Seal of Biliteracy. Students can apply online atwww.tulasaschools.org/sealofbiliteracy. 

The 2020-2021 school year marks the district’s third year of offering students the opportunity to graduate with a Seal of Biliteracy. In the first year of the program, Tulsa Public Schools was the first public school district in the State of Oklahoma to offer the Seal of Biliteracy in 11 different languages. Tulsa is also the first school district in the state to award the Seal of Biliteracy in Chinese, Indonesian, Yoruba, and Zomi languages.

“Students who successfully earn the Seal of Biliteracy not only increase global cultural competence, but gain strong language skills that will help them be successful in college, careers, and life,” said Interim Chief Learning Officer Ebony Johnson. “Since the beginning of this program during the 2018-2019 school year, 115 graduates have earned a Seal of Biliteracy award. We are so proud of our students’ accomplishments, and we are excited to offer this opportunity to this year’s seniors.”

Seventy-six graduates of the class of 2020 earned the Tulsa Public Schools Seal of Biliteracy after successfully attaining proficiency in both English and an additional language by high school graduation. The 76 graduates in the district’s second cohort earned seals in six languages: Chinese, French, Indonesian, Spanish, Yoruba, and Zomi.  

The student application deadline is Friday, Dec. 18; eligible students must demonstrate proficiency in more than one language. Students can visit www.tulsaschools.org/sealofbiliteracy to apply.
